High-performing teams harness diverse skills to drive towards a shared vision, thriving on synergy, collaboration, and collective excellence. Achieving this requires both team integration and appreciation.

But what if your team isn't performing at its best? Here are some signals of team distress:

  1. Poor communication: leading to misunderstandings, increased conflict, and a blame culture

  2. Disengaged members: Low morale, lack of passion or commitment, and a drop in innovation

  3. Missed deadlines: frequent failings in meeting goals and deadlines.

As Sir John Whitmore said in Coaching for Performance, "The most important conversation is the one we have with ourselves."

As a leader, manager, or HR professional, your role is crucial in shaping your team's internal dialogue and, consequently, their performance. How is your team's internal dialogue shaping their performance?

Addressing team issues requires a strategic approach. Focus on fostering integration and examining disruption. These steps are crucial in understanding and resolving team problems.

Integration

Integration involves bringing team members together effectively and inclusively. This process can be achieved if the team collectively notices and understands the causes of their team disruption.

Disruption

Examining disruption has an enriching and restorative effect on the team. They will recognise the complexity of their own dynamic and its impact on others, which in turn helps them support one another through the natural cycles of integration and disruption.

Diversity

It's crucial to recognise that each team member is unique. They will have varying levels of self-awareness, emotional development, and ability or willingness to understand the emerging team dynamics. Societal privilege (whether race, gender, religion, socioeconomic status, ability status, sexuality, age, education level etc.) will manifest within the group; activities to upskill the team on this are paramount.

Remember also that it's possible a team member will remain resistant to change. Consider then additional support, such as one-on-one coaching.‌
